If you are even a little bit interested in the End Times, you will know that attempting a

Timeline for the Book of Revelation

is a tad ambitious!

The Books of Revelation, Ezekial, and others are riveting reads that are packed with symbolism and prophecies that are mind-blowing in their detail. Nobody knows their interpretation for sure, there are only educated theories, of which this is one.   We think this Revelation Roster is a good one!

The Book of Revelation is the only one that promises a blessing for reading it:
Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it;” Revelation 1:3

So read on!

Pre-Tribulation
Setting the Stage
Pre-Tribulation Events

The Bible warns of numerous events and circumstances that serve as precursors to specific End-time prophecies.

This timeline begins with historical events and progresses towards the predictions found in the Book of Revelation.

587 BC
1st Temple destroyed
Solomon's Temple

Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonian army destroyed the First Temple, fulfilling biblical prophecy. The Temples hold significance because both their existence and destruction were foretold in scripture.

The Bible mentions a Temple during the Tribulation period, but currently, there is none. This means a Fourth Temple is still to be built.

Zerubbabel's Temple

King Cyrus of Persia had allowed the Jews to go back to Jerusalem after the Babylonian exile.  They built a small version of Solomon's Temple. Construction started in 538 BC and was completed in 515 BC. It stood for around 500 years and then King Herod gave it an overhaul.

AD 70
2nd Temple destroyed
Herod's Temple

King Herod the Great built Israel's third temple. He didn't build it from scratch, it was Zerubbabel's Temple which he jazzed up.  Immensely!

It took 46 years to build, and it was destroyed 6 years after its completion.

14 May 1948
Israel declared independence
Israel flag on hill

As predicted by Isaiah, Israel was "born in one day" when it was established as the State of Israel on 14 May 1948. Isaiah 66:8

A slow progression down...
Obviously, no finite start or end
The United States Weakens
worn American flag

The antichrist will head a revived Roman Empire, which will be the economic and political centre of the world.  For this to happen, the US will need to lose its power and control.  The exact placing on the timeline is speculative.

Christians resurrected

The 'Read more' button links to the same page as the Rapture of the Church because it is basically the same event.

The Church Saints are those who have already died. They will be resurrected, then will be "caught up" (or Raptured) together with those who are still alive at the time.

Pre-Tribulation Rapture
the rapture of the church

This timeline follows the belief of a Pre-Tribulation Rapture.

Read more for what the Bible says about who will be "caught up", and when.  The Book of Revelation is quite specific about the order of ascension, and the events that follow the Rapture.

The Restrainer is Removed
dove in a purple sky

The Restrainer, most likely, is the Holy Spirit.  When The Church (God's people) are Raptured, the Holy Spirit (living in them) will go with them...  but not entirely (you'll be pleased to know).  With the Restrainer largely out of the picture, lawlessness will really have a field day!

I don't want to be here then! Do you want to be here then?

the Judgement seat of Christ

We know the Judgement Seat follows the Rapture (which is before the Tribulation period). When it is exactly is hard to say, but the Judgement Seat is for believers, and so is distinct from the White Throne Judgement, which is for unbelievers.

And so it Begins
The Revelation Roster begins
antichrist signs a peace treaty

We don't know when the antichrist first makes an appearance; we only know that when he appears "...this is how we know it is the last hour." 1 John 2:18

So I have put him in here, but he could just as easily make his appearance at any time. His relevance in end time prophesy begins when he signs a peace treaty with Israel.

7 Years of Tribulation
First Half
Trigger: The antichrist signs a peace treaty with Israel
The First 3½ Years

The 7 year Tribulation period begins, when the antichrist signs a peace treaty with Israel, and the three sets of Judgements are poured out on the Earth.

The 7 Seal Judgements are followed by the 7 Trumpet Judgements, which are followed by the 7 Bowl Judgements. Each becomes more terrifying and more destructive. These 21 Judgements are doled out intermittently over the course of 7 years.

The Judgements Begin
The Lamb opens the Scroll
and the 21 increasingly terrible judgements begin
Angel holding 6 seal judgements

The first six Seal Judgements happen during the first forty-two months (first half) of the Tribulation.

The first four Seals release The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, which signify conquest, war, famine, and death. The Old Testament lists them as sword, famine, wild beasts, and pestilence or plague.

The 144,000 men of Revelation

Before the 6th Seal Judgement is released, an Angel orders a halt to proceedings "until we have placed the seal of God on the foreheads of his servants". Revelation 7:1

God's two prophetic witnesses dressed in sack cloth

These guys arrive early in the Tribulation period to prophesy for 42 months (3½ years).

During that time, they will have the power to stop the rain, turn water into blood, and "smite the earth with plagues", as often as they like!

Preparation is underway
Robes, tapestries and utensils are being prepared aready...
Tribulation Temple being built

Nowhere in the Bible is it explicitly stated that a new temple will be built.  There has to be a Jewish Temple, and it has to be in Jerusalm, to fulfil a bunch of Biblical prophecies in Daniel, Thessalonians Matthew and Revelation.

Tribulation Midpoint
Second Half
Trigger: The antichrist breaks the treaty, stands in the Temple and proclaims himself to be God
The Great Tribulation

The second 3½ years, called The Great Tribulation, brings increasingly treacherous judgements.  Triggered by "the antichrist, the 'abomination of desolation' standing in the holy place". Matthew 24:15

an angel with a red seal

The 7th Seal releases the Trumpet Judgements. When this one is broken, nothing immediately happens! There is silence in heaven for half an hour (maybe a literal half hour, maybe not).

And then "the angel filled the incense burner with fire from the alter and threw it down upon the earth" (Revelation 8:5) and things really start to hot up!

2 of 3
angel with trumpets around him

The Four Trumpet Judgements bring destruction of the earth. As the four angels blow their trumpet one at a time, each trumpet brings greater devastation.

Trumpets 5 - 7 unleash the "terrors".

2 of 3
The Seven Thunders
angel with his hands over his mouth

Something may happen here, but we aren't told what! The Seven Thunders appear in John's vision but a voice from heaven told him to "Seal up what the seven thunders have said and do not write it down". Revelation 10:4

2 of 3
angel blowing a trumpet

When the angel blows this trumpet, it is followed by a declaration: “The time has come for . . . destroying those who destroy the earth”.

The 7th Trumpet Judgement contains the 7 Bowl Judgements!

At last, the elusive Ark of the Covenant will be found!

But then the Bowl Judgements begin...

battle of armageddon

Armageddon is not a term used for the End Times in general, as is often misunderstood.  Armageddon is the name given to The Great Battle that will occur at the end of the Tribulation period.

3 of 3
An angel holding a gold bowl

The 7th Bowl is poured out, followed by a catastrophic earthquake, the worst the world has ever seen, and a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying "It is done".

3 of 3
a woman in a red dress looks up at a beast with many heads

This one nearly didn't make it on the timeline because nothing specific happens at this time. It's placed here in the Book of Revelation and is a spectacularly graphic story. A fascinating read!

second coming of christ

With divine splendor, Christ's Second Coming will astonish the world. Skies part, trumpets sound and darkness vanishes. Hearts awaken, embracing ultimate redemption, as His triumphant presence offers eternal transformation.

This is the event we've been waiting for, for 2,000 years!

An angel with the key to the bottomless pit "laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the devil" and bound  him for a thousand years.

And then what?

resurrection of the tribulation saints

The seven years of tribulation will be a time of unparalleled hardship and suffering on Earth. I understand it will occur after the Rapture.

During the Tribulation, those who come to faith in Jesus Christ will face severe persecution and martyrdom for their allegiance to Him. They are referred to as the Tribulation Saints and they will be resurrected.

cow and tiger lying together

The Millennial Kingdom, also called the Messianic Kingdom, refers to the thousand-year reign of Jesus Christ on Earth. A time of unparalleled peace, justice and restoration. But it's not our final destination because people will die during this time.

white throne judgement

This is the Final Judgement, when the dead are resurrected to be judged, "according to their works"

Whoever is not found written in the Book of Life is cast into the lake of fire. Is this all unbelievers? Including those who have never heard the name "Jesus"?

the devil is loosed on earth

When the Millennial Kingdom, the 1000 years, is up, Satan will be loosed on earth for "a little season".  This will be his last ditch attempt to deceive the nations once more.  And he succeeds! "...the number of whom is as the sand of the sea."

After all we know, he still wins people over. Astounding!

God on a throne

Eternity in the Bible is a period of either eternal happiness or eternal punishment, depending on the choices you make during your time on earth.

So choose wisely!
